What makes a nurse resume different?

  • Licence verification. Before a recruiter cares about your achievements, they need to know you are legally allowed to practise. Your registration body, licence or registration number, and renewal date are non-negotiable and belong high on the page.
  • Certification matching. Many postings list mandatory certifications such as BLS, ACLS, PALS or specialty credentials. The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) literally searches for these acronyms. Miss them and you can be filtered out before a human ever looks.
  • Unit and patient-population fit. An ICU nurse and a paediatric outpatient nurse do completely different work. Recruiters scan for the exact setting, acuity level and patient population that match the vacancy.

A note on credentials in your header. The accepted convention is to list them in this order: highest non-nursing degree, licence, then certifications (for example, Priya Nair, BSN, RN, CCRN). How do you write the nurse resume summary?

Your summary is a 2-4 line pitch directly under your name. It tells the recruiter your title, your experience, your specialty and one piece of evidence that you are good. Drop the word "I" and lead with a credential or a number.

A reliable formula for an experienced nurse:

How do you list licences and certifications?

This is the section that separates nursing resumes from every other field, and the one candidates most often get wrong by burying it at the bottom. Place licences and certifications directly under your summary.

For each licence, include four things:

  1. Registration body (your state board, council or regulator)
  2. Registration / licence number exactly as printed on your card
  3. Type (RN, RM, LPN, etc.)
  4. Status and renewal/expiry date

Then list certifications as a separate block. Write the full acronym, the issuing body where useful, and the current/expiry date so a recruiter can see they are live:

  • PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) - valid to MM/YYYY

Always spell the acronym at least once. The ATS may be searching for "Basic Life Support" while the recruiter scans for "BLS", so give it both on first use. If a certification is in progress, say so honestly: "ACLS - scheduled August 2026."

What clinical skills and keywords belong on a nurse resume?

Your clinical skills section is the densest keyword zone on the page, and it is where most ATS matching happens. The rule is simple: read the job posting, and use the exact terms it uses. If the vacancy says "telemetry monitoring," do not write "heart monitoring."

How do you write nursing experience bullets?

Once a recruiter has confirmed you are licensed and certified, the experience section is what convinces them you can actually carry the patient load. List roles in reverse-chronological order, newest first. Each entry gets a header line and three to six bullets.

The header for each role:

Then build each bullet around four parts: the action you took, the care or procedure it involved, the clinical setting and acuity you worked in, and the result it produced.   • Patient load ("managed 5-6 patients per shift on a 32-bed unit")
  • Acuity / setting ("high-acuity ICU", "Level 1 trauma centre", "24-bed telemetry floor")
  • Volume ("triaged 40+ patients per shift in a busy ED")
  • Outcomes ("reduced catheter-associated UTIs", "improved HCAHPS scores", "zero medication errors over 18 months")
  • Teaching / leadership ("precepted 8 new graduates", "charge nurse on rotation")

Lead each bullet with a strong verb: assessed, administered, monitored, triaged, stabilised, educated, coordinated, precepted, advocated, documented. Avoid starting every line with "responsible for." Each line should pair an action with a measurable outcome, so a nurse manager can picture the shift you describe rather than read a job description back to themselves.

New grad nurse resume tips

If you have just qualified, you are not experience-poor, you are experience-different. Use these moves:

  1. Convert clinical rotations into experience. List each placement like a job: unit, hospital, dates and total hours, with bullets on what you did ("Completed 180-hour med-surg rotation; performed assessments, administered medications under supervision, and documented in Cerner").
  2. State your licence status clearly. "NCLEX-RN: passed, licence pending" or "Registered with State Nursing Council, June 2026" tells recruiters you are ready to start.
  3. Count anything healthcare-adjacent. Healthcare assistant, CNA, ward volunteer, phlebotomy or care-home work all demonstrate real patient contact.
  4. Lead with a focused objective. "New-graduate RN seeking a medical-surgical role to apply strong assessment, medication and EHR skills developed across 700+ clinical hours."

If you are short on paid roles, treat every clinical placement as evidence: the no-experience principle is to make your training, hours and supervised procedures concrete. What is the best format for a nurse resume?

Use a reverse-chronological, single-column layout saved as a PDF (unless the application portal demands a Word file). This is the format the ATS parses most reliably and the one a busy nurse recruiter reads fastest.

Format rules that protect your ATS score:

  • One column, standard headings. Avoid two-column templates, text boxes and tables for your main content. Parsers read left to right, top to bottom, and a sidebar can scramble your dates.
  • No photos, logos or graphics. A headshot adds nothing in most nursing markets and can confuse the parser. Skip it.
  • Standard fonts and clear section titles. Use plain titles like "Licences & Certifications" and "Clinical Skills" so both the machine and the human know where to look.
  • Consistent dates. Use Month YYYY format everywhere. Inconsistent dates are a common parsing failure.
  • Spell out acronyms once. Helps the ATS match both the short and long form.
